Anneliese Garrison had taken the National Council of Licensure Examination
(NCLEX) three times, and was down to about $5.00 in her checking account.
The boards cost about $200.00 each time, and had to be spaced three
months apart, she said.
When you've finished your training and know your job, it isn't easy
to go to work doing something else because you are broke and waiting
for the long awaited certification, she said.
The l996 graduate of the Cumberland County College Nursing Program
had to take a job as a certified nurses' aide (CNA) at a paltry $6.25 an
hour while waiting to learn if she passed the test, known by most students
as "the Boards".
Today, she is a nursing supervisor on the third shift at the Vineland
Developmental Center but she hasn't forgotten how tough it was to
take the test, not once, but three times before she became a Registered
Nurse.
At $200.00 a pop, the tests turned out to be an expensive part of her
education, but did not deter her from reaching her goal.
Today, she is trying to help others in the nursing program who may
be in a position similar to hers, and has established the Caring 4 You
Scholarship Fund, which provides the NCLEX fee for students who have successfully
graduated from the college's nursing program. The scholarship however
is not based on financial needs or having great grades. Instead, she says,
she wants to foster the giving side of everyone.
"If given the opportunity, how would you give back to the community
in which you live?" she asks. "We make a living by what we get. We make
a life by what we give."
To qualify for the scholarship, a person must be a student at Cumberland
County College, in the last semester before graduation in the year for
which the application is requested. A 500 word essay is required, of the
subject "When given the opportunity, how will you give back to your
community?"
"Grades are not the top criteria to receive the scholarship, although
a financial need would be applicable," she said.
To find out more, those interested should email Garrison at http://caring4you.net/scholarship,
but the contact information for the scholarship will be made to the Cumberland
County College Foundation, she said.
All applicants identities will remain anonymous until after the selection
process, and the award will be presented during the nursing ceremony at
the college.
Presently, Garrison pays the scholarships out of her own funds and
from proceeds of the services she offers as a computer consultant and web
page designer. Businesses can place low-cost advertisements on her web
site.
"My goal is to have at least $2000.00 available a year to pay for 10
students to take the NCLEX, Garrison said.
"In the future, I plan to have fund raising events with the help of
others. I also want to give them out on the web, maybe" she said, "...and will post the recipients on my web site in the future".
