My Thoughts On Kaplan ….
I just thought I would share this. I do not have personal first hand
knowledge as I have never taken the Kaplan Review.
I do teach my own NCLEX Review course. Many of the students have told
me that they have taken Kaplan and failed the nclex.
They had brought to my attention that Kaplan does not have nurses
teaching the course. One person had a friend that taught for Kaplan
that knew nothing about nursing. They just read from their kaplan
books. This person told me that kaplan taught her friend that if a
student asks a question that she did not know how to answer as a
teacher, Kaplan taught her how to steer the student back to the book!
They have nurses on their staff but it will not be a nurse that will
necessarily be teaching you the material.
I just thought for all the money you will be spending, you have a right
to know about the Review Course.
Please feel free to share your thoughts on any Review Course you have
taken, good or bad.
I am not criticizing, I am just passing along information that I think
you may find helpful to make an informed decision.
Comments to My Thoughts:
Thank you for daring to say what other have not. I am an NCLEX
coach/tutor and it recently came to my attention (from one of my
client's) that the local Kaplan Center was using a physician to teach
the course. In this particular instance the MD was going over
NCLEX-style questions, without an answer key. The students directed
toward the answers that the course leader believed were "correct based
on their practice". Needless to say all of the "correct" answers were
incorrect from an NCLEX/nursing perspective.
Given that the information I acquired was not first hand I provided
appropriate support/remediation to my NCLEX client, but was angered
about the situation.
All I can say is buyer beware. Thanks for informing the public about
this practice.
I do believe that the consumer has to thoroughly investigate whatever
review course that are interested in before signing on to it. The
course should fit their individual needs and learning style.
Your thoughts was very well said. You are absolutely right. I am
originally from the Philippines and saw hundreds of RN's going thru
Kaplan there and felt so sorry because I know how it is at Kaplan's.
What many nursing graduates dont understand (there and even here in the
United States) is that most, if not all, NCLEX questions deal with
analysis in the clinical application of Nursing theories and
principles, with answers based on personal clinical experience rather
than on those established theories and principles. Makes me wonder how
could one, who is not an RN, give a review based on the textbooks only.
I feel like so many are getting ripped off on this.
