What Every Computer Should Have Installed
A Browser: This is the way you will surf the web. These browsers I recommend. Try them all and pick the one you like. AOL users can use these by connecting through AOL, minimizing and then opening one of these browsers. These are free but they take hours to download if you don't choose to buy the CD ROM.

Internet Explorer

Netscape [download 4.7 NOT 6.0]

Opera [A good alternative to either]

Neoplanet [interphases with IE and is more decorative]

BrowserWatch

A Uninstaller: A unistaller is great for taking the right things out of the registry after you get rid of something. If you don't clean the registry, things won't work correctly even if you uninstall. A uninstaller gets rid of EVERYTHING that you want to unistall so it is worth the money. One comes with Windows but here are a few more recommendations.

McAfee's Uninstaller here.

Space Odyssey. This is okay but it is FREE if you have nothing.

Arclab. I like this because it gets rid of all the unecessary .LOG files.

A Antivirus Program: Keep in mind that it is not enough to just install an antivirus program but I would recommend you upgrade your program at least once a month because new viruses come out every day. Which ever program you decide to use, UPDATE it or it is useless.

McAfee Antivirus.

Norton's Antivirus.

Instant Messagers: This is a great way to meet friends or people on the web. I like these better than chat rooms that can get out of hand. You can never have too many IM's. Install one or install them all. You don't have to be an AOL user to have AOL's IM.

Yahoo's IM.

AOL's IM.

ICQ IM.

MSN IM.

Excite IM.

ICU2. Good IM for Web Camer's but you don't have to have a webcam to enjoy seeing others or getting messages.

Media Capture Device: Yes, Windows does come with Windows Media Player but there are so many other alternatives that play other formats. I would recommend having at least 2 kinds on your computer.

Install a media player for .WAV files and MP3 files and the FLASH player. FLASH will allow you to view the more advanced webpages and 'Net Games. Try them and pick from my list here.

A Search Engine: Yes, you can go to the address part of your browswer, type in a word and hit "search". But I recommend these sites for a more powerful search.

I have a list of online search engines [the best being google] here.

This is a good one that sits on your desktop Web Ferret.

These are a must to have....
Winzip. This will compress files and open .ZIP files.
