Classes: How To Improve Your Reading

The reading classes on wiziq have come to a close and below are some improvements that can be made with your reading that I noticed over the 10 week period. ( Previous Reading Classes )

Problem: Some could read but then were unable to tell me what they had just read.

Solution: Review the Academic Reading classes again. Instead of listening to the whole class, pause it, read what is on the screen and take notes while you are reading. For each paragraph read, summarize what you just read in your own words. This will help you with “comprehension“.

Problem: The words were too big and you had trouble with some of the meaning of the words.

Solution: As you read and you come across a word you do not know, look it up on the internet. Use 3 by 5 cards. On one side, place the vocabulary word. On the flip side, write the meaning. You may also want to record the words so that you can listen to them while you are working around the house, excercising, etc.

Problem: Some people could not answer the questions at the end of the reading.

Solution: Again this is just a matter of taking notes and understanding what you are reading. Please remember that you will have 60 – 100 minutes for the reading section for the TOEFL and the 60 minutes for the IELTS. There will be 3 reading passages on the IELTS and 3-5 passages on the TOEFL. Practice, Practice, Practice and time management makes perfect.

Problem: Some were mumbling and reading too fast / slow.

Solution: This is not really a problem but it will be with the speaking section of the IELTS / TOEFL. This mayy be because you are nervous. This is easily remedied, just keep coming to classes. There is nothing to fear but fear itself.

Keep up the good work. I will see you in my other classes to be sure. If you need further assistance, further help is available, upon request.
